Kitasato University

Kitasato University is regarded as one of Japan’s leading universities in the field of Life Sciences. It was founded in 1962 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Kitasato Institute, Japan’s first private medical research institute. Since then, for more than half a century, the University has striven to advance the study of life phenomena, medicine, health, and welfare. It has aimed to advance the discovery and utilization of biological resources and the promotion of environmental conservation. Our community includes more than 8,900 students, 1,800 faculty members, and 85,100 alumni. Notable faculty members include Distinguished Emeritus Professor Satoshi Ōmura, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. The University is spread over 4 main campuses. The Shirokane Campus (Tokyo) is home to Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Infection Control Sciences, and School of Pharmacy. The Sagamihara Campus (Kanagawa prefecture) includes 5 graduate schools (Marine Biosciences, Nursing, Science, Medical Sciences and Frontier Engineering), 6 schools (Medicine, Marine Biosciences, Nursing, Science, Allied Health Sciences and Frontier Engineering), and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Towada Campus (Aomori prefecture) has Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences and School of Veterinary Medicine. The Niigata Campus includes School of Health Sciences established in 2024. Kitasato University covers all the Life Sciences and conducts practical research in a flexible approach. Especially, we place emphasis on interprofessional healthcare education and research, research and education in agromedicine, medical treatment that incorporates western and oriental medicine, and research and education for infection control. The University has three hospitals. The medical institutions also function as a clinical education and training venue for the university’s undergraduate and graduate students. Observership programs are offered to international medical students.
